Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg has revolutionized the world of music as we know it today. In the mid-nineties, he developed a method for the compression of digital audio data so that only those audio signals that are audible to humans are stored. The overall listening pleasure remains largely the same but the data volume reduces significantly. Music in the small MP3 format has become a globally successful multimedia standard. It can be played on smartphones, portable music players, computers or in the car.
Currently, Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg is the Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau. He has won several awards for the invention of the MP3 method and has been admitted to the Internet Hall of Fame of the Internet Society.
